According to a recent study published in Pediatrics, 48% of young children hospitalized with injuries consistent with abuse were not thoroughly checked for other injuries, especially in hospitals that do not specialize in pediatrics. Despite the American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines, many hospitals do not provide the necessary skeletal surveys which these injuries require and which often indicate a need for additional medical services or serve as evidence of abuse.
