NJ Advocates for Immigrant Detainees Issued Opinion Piece Denouncing Essex County Detention Contract
In this article, the recent introduction of Essex County detention contract on October 1, 2011 is addressed. This contract proposes increased funds to be used for improving conditions in the Essex County corrections facilities. NJAID, a local immigrant rights organization considers this as a “flawed deal.”1 Members of the NJAID organization argue against the implementation of the contract based on the fact that GEO is a for-profit prison company that will be paid directly with the new contract in effect, as well as on frequently publicized assertions that detaining immigrants does in reality not protect the U.S.'s national security. NJAID's proposition for a change that will countermand this contract includes the establishment of a citizen and expert oversight committee. The goals of such a committee would be to increase public awareness and bring about safer living conditions.
