Adjunct Professors Struggle to Make Ends Meet
Many American college professors, including those at Duke University, are reminiscing on the days when they were middle-class citizens as some of them struggle to maintain the lifestyles of a professional worker. This has produced the unionization drive currently blossoming among North Carolina and national universities. Many colleges continue to hire part-time or adjunct professors; in fact they make up as much as 70% of higher education faculty positions. At Duke University, one of North Carolina and the United States’ most prestigious schools, nearly half of teaching is the responsibility of contingent faculty. 25% of adjunct professors often struggle to make ends meet, despite their long work hours and positions of trust, and must often rely on public assistance programs such as Medicaid or food stamps.
