Crawford County Solid Waste Authority will get its $150,000 budgeted amount from the county for 2016, but whether it receives its full $200,000 budget request remains unknown. At their meeting Wednesday, county commissioners voted to approve the Solid Authority's request to release $100,000 of the $150,000 budgeted amount to go toward funding the Solid Waste Authority's recycling program.
For 2016, the Solid Waste Authority had requested a $200,000 operating subsidy from county government due to rising contract costs of transporting recyclables, but the previous board of commissioners, which set the county’s 2016 county budget, only allocated $150,000.
Without full funding, the Solid Waste Authority could be forced by April to either close its voluntary countywide recycling program entirely or severely cut the number of drop-off recycling sites, Brenda Schmidt, the recycling program's director, said at the Solid Waste Authority's meeting on Feb. 15.
