$9 million Smock Bridge rehabilitation may start in April

A planned rehabilitation of the Meadville area's Smock Bridge will cost a little more than $9 million, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

Bids for the bridge, which connects routes 6, 19 and 322 between Meadville and Vernon Township, have been opened with a Westmoreland County contractor the apparent low bidder, according to Jim Carroll, PennDOT spokesman.Swank Construction Co. of New Kensington is the apparent lowest of five bidders on the contract with a bid of $9,063,920.10, Carroll said.

The rehabilitation project was estimated by PennDOT to cost between $7.5 million to $10 million.Rehabilitation of the four-lane-wide state-owned Smock Bridge is expected to begin in early April, Carroll said.
