Study Explains Why Non-Profits Struggle To Replace Senior Staff
According to a new study, nonprofit leaders are not promoting current staff to senior positions, despite consistent difficulties with succession. “The Nonprofit Leadership Development Deficit,” a paper from the Bridgespan Group, has reported a “broad gap in leadership development,” noting that only 30% of nonprofit senior positions were filled by internal promotion in the past two years. Katie Smith Milway, co-author of the paper, describes this phenomenon as a “turnover treadmill,” one of the primary hurdles facing US non-profits.
