New Discrimination Ordinance May Harm People with Disabilities
Advocates for people with disabilities worry that the new bathroom ordinance will negatively affect people with physical and developmental disabilities, many of whom require assistance while using the restroom. These caregivers are often people of the opposite gender who, under the new ordinance, can only use the bathroom which corresponds to their biological sex. According to Corye Dunn, a representative of Disability Rights North Carolina, “Many of the practices that make bathrooms more accessible for gender non-conforming people also make them more accessible for people with disabilities.”
