NC Invests in a Better Foster System
North Carolina has more than 10,000 children currently in foster care. It is a well-documented fact that many foster kids struggle with homelessness and transience for the rest of their childhood, if not longer. When they age of the system, as approximately 500 to 700 do each year, many lack the skills to survive independent life, making them less likely to graduate from high school and more likely to go to prison, become pregnant, or experience homelessness. Last year, NC raised the age for leaving the foster system from 18 to 21 and redirected funds for finding permanent homes.
