Teachers Use Music to Educate

When a teacher raps, comes to classroom in costume, or creates a humorous video, students have a tendency to sit up and pay attention. Many educators, including social studies teacher Claire Tamayo and math teacher Kristy Johnson, are taking advantage of this fact, writing and performing music to help their students master concepts and retain information. Their methods aren’t just the latest fad—according to a 2007 Stanford University study, music engages areas of the brain necessary for attentiveness and foresight.
