Low Teacher Pay Worries NC Board of Education

North Carolina’s Board of Education has listed six budget priorities for Gov. Pat McCrory’s administration, and named low teacher pay the number one problem for 2016. Superintendent of Public Instruction June Atkinson has already asked legislators for a 10% teacher pay increase, and is optimistic that upcoming elections will elicit a response. NC public schools are currently ranked 11th in the Southeast for teacher pay and 47th in the nation. According to state records, a first year teacher with a bachelor’s degree makes only $35,000 and even veterans earn only $46,500.
