Assembly Dems Sign Off On Charter School Compromise

"A deal that would link future increases in per-pupil charter school aid to public school funding could be breaking the logjam around the state’s $150-plus billion budget." , as reported by Jimmy Vielkind and Keshia Clukey for Politico NY.

"Talks blew up Wednesday evening in part over the issue of charter school funding, which had been frozen since 2009. Republicans in the state Senate pushed to thaw the freeze — which would have directed millions more to charter schools that Democrats in the state Assembly and teachers unions often oppose."

"According to a Democratic assemblyman, base tuition aid would stay frozen in the coming school year. However, there would be an increase in supplemental per-pupil aid from $500 to $1,450. Details are subject to change until the bills are printed, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie said shortly after 4 p.m., and talks will continue Thursday evening."
